PEARL SPOT (KARIMEEN)
Pearl Spot (Karimeen) is one of the most sought after fish in Kerala Commonly found backwaters of Kerala. Being an authentic dish of the state, it can be cooked in a variety of styles. In 2010 this Kari meen was named the official state fish of Kerala. It is low in fat and has high protein content. This fish is fairly expensive and is available throughout the year. It is caught mainly using gillnets. It commonly reaches 20 centimetres (7.9 in) in length, and the maximum length is twice that.

Karimeen used to prepare various dishes such as Karimeen -muppas, Karimeen Fry, Karimeen Molly etc. but it is best known for the karimeen polichathu, a dish that the fish is fried or steamed after wrapping it in foil or banana leaves.
